Lauren Reid, our 2016 winner, is a 3rd year Aerospace Engineering student in the Engineering Science program at the University of Toronto. She is inspired by Elon Musk and his business ventures, including SpaceX, and hopes to similarly have an entrepreneurial career in aerospace engineering. Using university labs Lauren has conducted award-winning research for several years with the objective of understanding and improving the performance of airfoils while guided by the design principle of environmental sustainability.
Lauren is also a strong advocate since 2008 on behalf of youth in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (‘STEM’) speaking with students, teachers, parents, community groups and the Board of Education to raise awareness of STEM and the amazing opportunities available, and to encourage youth to participate. Her advocacy has been varied including presentations, workshops, media articles, television appearances, and a TEDxYouth talk, “Science is for Everyone.”
In 2015, in recognition of her research and her advocacy, Lauren was named one of Canada’s Top 20 Under 20 and a Rotary Youth Leader.
