The 2010 renewal of the CASI Canadian Student Summit on Aerospace was held last Saturday September 18. Our host university this year was McGill, specifically the McGill Institute for Aerospace Engineering and its Executive Director Professor Stephen Yue. Approximately 70 delegates and speakers participated in the day-long event. The program featured very senior representatives from the aviation and space communities. Their presentations focused on what is new and exciting in their organizations, what the organizations are looking for in new hires, and personal anecdotes describing interesting twists and turns in the career paths of the speakers. Many topics were discussed during the full day of activities, and the relatively compact size of the audience afforded lots of opportunity for one-on-one dialogue between students and speakers. A box lunch was served and the break provided some valuable networking time. The keynote presentation by Dr. Fassi Kafyeke, a Past President of CASI, covered his vision of how the future of aviation will be influenced by environmental and sustainability drivers. The afternoon concluded with a game devised by Dr. along the lines of Trivial Pursuit but drawing upon aviation themes as well as the content of the speakers’ earlier presentation. It was great fun and was taken very seriously by the teams.
