CASI CSSA at McGill Judged a Resounding Success!

The 2010 renewal of the CASI Canadian Student Summit on Aerospace was held last Saturday September 18. Our host university this year was McGill, specifically the McGill Institute for Aerospace Engineering and its Executive Director Professor Stephen Yue.

Approximately 70 delegates and speakers participated in the day-long event. The program featured very senior representatives from the aviation and space communities. Their presentations focused on what is new and exciting in their organizations, what the organizations are looking for in new hires, and personal anecdotes describing interesting twists and turns in the career paths of the speakers.

Many topics were discussed during the full day of activities, and the relatively compact size of the audience afforded lots of opportunity for one-on-one dialogue between students and speakers. A box lunch was served and the break provided some valuable networking time. The keynote presentation by Dr. Fassi Kafyeke, a Past President of CASI, covered his vision of how the future of aviation will be influenced by environmental and sustainability drivers. The afternoon concluded with a game devised by Dr. along the lines of Trivial Pursuit but drawing upon aviation themes as well as the content of the speakers’ earlier presentation. It was great fun and was taken very seriously by the teams.

The final event was a paper airplane competition.

The participants adjourned to Thomson House, a.k.a. the McGill Graduate Student’s Society building, for a no-host reception followed by a delicious chicken brochette dinner. The speaker was Dr. Clément Fortin, Chief Executive Officer of CRIAQ, the Consortium de recherché et d’innovation en aérospatiale au Québec. He explained how the definition, funding and completion of CRIAQ projects worked, and gave valuable advice to the delegates on how to become involved in these projects. In the months to come CASI and CRIAQ will identify opportunities for collaboration between the two organizations.

Alexandra Blagojevic, Shruti Desai, Geoffrey Languedoc, Karisma Rego, Navreet Saini, Harita Mehta (from left to right) was taken at the dinner. There was some active discussion during the day about the prevalence and roles of women in aerospace engineering, and there were 14 female participants at the CSSA representing roughly 20% of the total.

We are happy that the feedback we have received was so positive, and we look forward to the next CSSA!
