CASI_icon_spotlight

CASI turns the spotlight on its members who are making an impact across the country and around the globe. These members exemplify the mission and vision of the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute. We gladly highlight our members as part of our mandate to make it the place to foster national pride and international esteem for Canada’s accomplishments in aeronautics, space and related technologies. If you are interested in participating or nominating another member for the spotlight, please contact Danielle Tremblay at danielle@casi.ca

We welcomabb_logo_print_4ce James Veilleux, a member since 2012, to the CASI Member Spotlight. James was recently a candidate vying for a spot to become one of Canada’s next astronauts in the CSA’s space program. He made it into the top 32 before being cut in the last round in May 2017. Everyone at CASI is very proud of James’ accomplishments.

What is your current job?
I am a systems engineer at ABB in Québec City. I am the technical interface to our customers and assume a role of technical leadership throughout the execution of our projects.

What is your most memorable CASI experience so far?
My most memorable CASI experience was the CASI Astro 2012 conference which was held at the Château Frontenac in Québec City.  The event was really fun and I had the chance to give a talk during regular sessions and also during the student event which was held at ABB.

What’s the highest altitude and speed you’ve reached?
The altitude and speed of a standard commercial flight onboard a Boeing 787. Nothing too much out of the ordinary!

What is the favourite moment of your career thus far?
My favourite moment in my career to date was watching the launch (remotely during a live broadcast) of the JAXA GOSAT-1 satellite. We all worked very hard at ABB on the TANSO-FTS interferometer design and testing.

What was your childhood dream job?
I wanted to be an engineer and see if I would have the chance to become an astronaut.

Guilty pleasure: what can you not live without?
Running and exercise! It can turn any ordinary day into a better one.
