Building Canadian Space Capacity - CASI Space Symposium 2010

Thursday, October 28th, 2010
The Brookstreet Hotel, Kanata, ON

The inaugural CASI Space Policy Workshop was held last fall, and the feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive.  Participants emphasized the unique features and outstanding value of the event.  They appreciated the all-plenary format, the mix of government, industry and academic backgrounds, the relaxed atmosphere and wide-ranging dialogue, the senior organizational level of the participants, and the fact that it took place under the Chatham House rule that forbids attribution of statements.

This year we will hold the event again, under a slightly different name:  the CASI Space Symposium.  The name change reflects our goal to broaden the topics covered, while continuing to encourage free-ranging discussion and to maximize opportunities for relationship-building and networking.   More information to follow soon....

Canadian space policy is under active discussion and formulation. The Canadian Space Agency is in the process of finalizing its Long Term Space Plan IV, the Department of National Defence is working on its own Space Policy and Strategy, and Canadian industry players are following all developments with great interest.

CASI Astronautics Conferences take place every two years. Since 2009 was an off-year, we decided to hold a one-day Space Policy Workshop. The goals were to keep the Canadian space community informed and engaged, and to provide an opportunity for some of the key players to offer their opinions about what Canadian space policy should be, and why.

Over 90 participants attended the Workshop that was held in downtown Ottawa. Here is a link to the program. The three Keynote presentations were given by:

Dr. James Fergusson, Director, Centre for Defence and Security Studies, U of Manitoba

Dr. Steve MacLean, President, Canadian Space Agency

Mr. John Keating, Chief Executive Officer, COM DEV Ltd.

The Keynote speakers stayed for the afternoon Round Table discussion that was moderated by Dr. Iain Christie, President, Neptec Design Group and included:

Dr. Paul Cooper, Vice President, Strategic Development, Information Systems, MDA

Dr. Michael Margolian, Director General Policy Planning, Department of National Defence

Dr. Stuart Salter, Director General, Canada Centre for Remote Sensing.

The entire program took place under the Chatham House Rule -- all comments made or overheard at the Workshop were to be without attribution -- as an aid to free discussion. Participants who returned the evaluation forms were unanimous in expressing their satisfaction with the Workshop, and their intention to attend future Workshops.

CASI thanks the Keynote speakers, Panellists, exhibitors, sponsors and the participants for making the day a success. We look forward to seeing many of you at our next main event: the 15th CASI Astronautics Conference that will be held in Toronto May 4-6, 2010. Here is a link to the ASTRO 2010 web page.
