Canadian Priorities - Global Opportunities

ASTRO 2012 is the 16th bi-annual astronautics conference of the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute. This year the conference will provide a unique opportunity for delegates from industry, government, defence and security, and academic organizations to meet and discuss with peers, colleagues and international partners.

The theme of ASTRO'12 is Canadian Priorities - Global Opportunites. The conference will feature strong international participation with a focus on what Canadians are doing in the space industry and how Canada can maintain and expand its role in global space markets, initiatives, and collaborations.

ASTRO’12 is being held from April 24-26 2012 in Québec City at the majestic Fairmont Le Château Frontenac Hotel. ASTRO’12 will be preceded by a Nanosatellite Workshop on April 23. Participants may register for either event separately or both together.

CASI 2011 Golf

Forty golfers took part in the 2011 CASI Golf Day on Friday July 29 at beautiful Hawkesbury Golf Club. It was an outstanding networking event with representatives from many aerospace-related organizations including the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Boeing, Bombardier, Canadian Business Aircraft Association, Consortium de recherché et d’innovation en aérospatiale au Québec, DND, IMP Aerospace, Innotech-Execaire, L-3, NRC Institute for Aerospace Research, SkyService and Transport Canada.

The post-round reporting of scores was somewhat haphazard and a complete tabulation proved to be out of reach. However we did record the low score on the course – Richard Warren shot an 83. We also recorded the winners of the closest-to-the-hole competition on hole 4 – Al Conrad, and hole 12 – Milenko Milekic.

To our surprise and delight, Jack Henry arrived at the Club in time to join us for dinner. As many of you will know, Jack has been a member of CASI for decades and for as long as most of us can remember, he has helped with the organization of the CASI Golf Tournament. Jack brought with him a porcelain figurine of a golfer and asked if CASI could make use of it. Then and there we created the Jack Henry Closest-to-the-Hole Award. We will add a base to the figurine and engrave plaques for the winner(s) each year, starting this year with Al and Milenko.

During a post-round Q&A session, there was strong support for the goal of growing our Golf Day – its great fun, and an excellent place to meet new colleagues and strengthen existing relationships. If you have not participated before, you should consider the business-to-business value of the event.

We also decided to promote the idea of including other groups under the CASI Golf Day umbrella. If you would like your organization to share CASI Golf Day, please contact us.

The date for next year’s CASI Golf Day is Friday August 24 2012. Once again it will be held at Hawkesbury Golf Course, and will include lunch, the round of golf and a scrumptious roast beef dinner.

Please mark your calendars now – you can’t afford to miss it!

Thank you to all who participated! See you next year!

Building Canadian Space Capacity - CASI Space Symposium 2010

Thursday, October 28th, 2010
The Brookstreet Hotel, Kanata, ON

The inaugural CASI Space Policy Workshop was held last fall, and the feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive. Participants emphasized the unique features and outstanding value of the event. They appreciated the all-plenary format, the mix of government, industry and academic backgrounds, the relaxed atmosphere and wide-ranging dialogue, the senior organizational level of the participants, and the fact that it took place under the Chatham House rule that forbids attribution of statements.

This year we will hold the event again, under a slightly different name: the CASI Space Symposium. The name change reflects our goal to broaden the topics covered, while continuing to encourage free-ranging discussion and to maximize opportunities for relationship-building and networking. More information to follow soon....

Canada's Future in Space - A Mission in Collaboration

Canadian space policy is under active discussion and formulation. The Canadian Space Agency is in the process of finalizing its Long Term Space Plan IV, the Department of National Defence is working on its own Space Policy and Strategy, and Canadian industry players are following all developments with great interest.

CASI Astronautics Conferences take place every two years. Since 2009 was an off-year, we decided to hold a one-day Space Policy Workshop. The goals were to keep the Canadian space community informed and engaged, and to provide an opportunity for some of the key players to offer their opinions about what Canadian space policy should be, and why.

Over 90 participants attended the Workshop that was held in downtown Ottawa. Here is a link to the program. The three Keynote presentations were given by:

Dr. James Fergusson, Director, Centre for Defence and Security Studies, U of Manitoba

Dr. Steve MacLean, President, Canadian Space Agency

Mr. John Keating, Chief Executive Officer, COM DEV Ltd.

The Keynote speakers stayed for the afternoon Round Table discussion that was moderated by Dr. Iain Christie, President, Neptec Design Group and included:

Dr. Paul Cooper, Vice President, Strategic Development, Information Systems, MDA

Dr. Michael Margolian, Director General Policy Planning, Department of National Defence

Dr. Stuart Salter, Director General, Canada Centre for Remote Sensing.

The entire program took place under the Chatham House Rule -- all comments made or overheard at the Workshop were to be without attribution -- as an aid to free discussion. Participants who returned the evaluation forms were unanimous in expressing their satisfaction with the Workshop, and their intention to attend future Workshops.

CASI thanks the Keynote speakers, Panellists, exhibitors, sponsors and the participants for making the day a success. We look forward to seeing many of you at our next main event: the 15th CASI Astronautics Conference that will be held in Toronto May 4-6, 2010. Here is a link to the ASTRO 2010 web page.
